reading cafe
The CWTTC Reading Cafe was designed to provide a warm and supportive space for collective members and past/current placement students to engage in fulsome discussions about decolonization. This idea comes from our own desire to learn more about ways to decolonize and promote healing, particularly as it relates to systems of child welfare. Here, we recognize our own needs to expand our journey and further immerse ourselves with the TRC principles. We aim to read more while unpacking ways we can act differently and go beyond being ‘tokenistic’ in our words and actions. At the Reading Cafe, we engage in difficult conversations while encouraging everyone to show up as their authentic selves. While discussing decolonization and reconciliation in the contexts of child welfare, we also aim to re-envision what this system can be. We are not experts and hope that this space also provides a peer supportive environment where we learn together while celebrating our differences.
Our intention and commitment to each other is to show up with our curious minds, ready to explore ways to decolonize ourselves and these systems, including considerations for how these systems cause harm. We acknowledge that we can also cause harm. We want to bring light to these harms perpetrated by the system and ourselves when looking at ways we can do better in the future.
